British cupcakes à la Leila

Image from www.leilasgeneralstore.com

Image from www.leilasgeneralstore.com

Have you seen these fantastic British inspired cup cakes with landmarks and icons like the Big Ben, the red routemaster and a London taxi.  I just love them! I recently found them in the Swedish celebrity chef Leila’s generalstore.

We understand Leila is very fond of Union Jack inspired products, and London is one of her favourite cities.  She’s just visited London actually and has got some really good suggestions on what to do and where to go, and not at least, for a great meal of course! Read more about her recent London visit here.

Most Swedes will probably have heard about Leila, but for those of you who haven’t….Leila Lindholm is a Swedish chef, she’s written several cook books and is frequently seen on Swedish Television. She started her careeer in New York, at the Swedish restaurant Aquavit. When she returned to Sweden she worked at leading Stockholm restaurants like Operakällaren and Fredsgatan 12. In 1999 she was honoured the female cook of the year and shortly after that she began her own business.

I’ve got the theme planned for my next party – it’ll be British of course! Now I just need to learn how to make cup cakes, well bake them is the minor problem, the challenge is how I will get them to look as beautiful as above….

Royal hats on the menu

The Berkeley hotel in Knightsbridge, is celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by offering visitors a Prêt-à-Portea – The Royal Collection afternoon tea.

I love the Berkeley’s fashion inspired bakery, it’s one of my favourite places  for afternoon tea in London. And now, for a limited time, (29 May-9 June) to mark The Queen’s 60th anniversary on the throne, the hotel’s special afternoon tea will include biscuits, fancy cakes and choux buns made to resemble the most memorable hats worn by the Royal Family. They look adorable, don’t you think?

The fashionable edibles will include a praline profiterole inspired by the much-talked-about Philip Treacy fascinator worn by Princess Beatrice at last year’s Royal Wedding and a vanilla biscuit with icing and sugar diamonds resembling the crown Queen Elizabeth wore for her coronation in 1953.

There will also be a strawberry pannacotta macaroon made to look like the Canadian maple leaf hat designed by Angela Kelly and worn by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge when she visited Canada.

It is believed that Elizabeth II has worn more than 5,000 hats since she became Queen in 1952!!

Quite impressive!

250 years of the British Sandwich

2012 marks the 250th anniversary of the sandwich, ‘officially’ at least. People have probably been eating sandwiches before this time but it was called something else….

John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (Sandwich is a town in the region Kent) allegedly ‘invented’ the bread snack in 1762 when he asked for meat to be served between slices of bread so that he didn’t have to take a lunch break during a gambling game. Before long, his friends were asking to have the ‘same as Sandwich’ and the popular convenience food was born.

Sandwich will of course be celebrating big style, on 12–13 May especially. The celebrations will include a Baguette versus Sandwich competition when locals from Sandwich’s ‘twin’ town of Honfleur will take part wearing their traditional French Normandy costume. There will also be a theatrical presentation of the creation of the very first sandwich, a concert of 18th-century music, a food fair and a Sandwich Competition in which visitors can enter their own sandwich creations.

Getting hungry now? I am!! So here’s a sandwich you can easily make yourself:

Coronation Chicken (for four)

250g cooked chicken (remove skin and bones)

50g mayonnaise

40g mango chutney

1 teaspoons curry power

Splash of lime juice (to taste)

Salt and pepper

(Be careful when using mayonnaise so that it doesn’t go soggy! )

Want to see how it’s made? Watch Gary Robson, Manager Nordics & Russia making sandwich live on Swedish TV:  TV4 Nyhetsmorgon

Whisky Afternoon Tea with a masculine touch

Any whisky lovers out there who fancy an afternoon tea? Well, then Scotland is the place to be.

Cameron House on Loch Lomond is now launching Whisky Afternoon Tea, with whisky from nearby Glengoyne Distillery.

This is a more masculine alternative to the traditional Champagne afternoon tea, and is designed to appeal to men especially, with a selection of savoury, carnivorous Scottish favourites served with Glengoyne whisky and a mug of tea on a slate spread.

Glengoyne Distillery is within easy reach from Glasgow (approx 30 minutes by car) and Edinburgh, so perfect location if you want to combine a whisky tuor with your city short break.

It’s really close to Loch Lomond and Cameron House too, so after the tour you can easily continue to the five-star resort and the Whisky Afternoon Tea. A perfect day out in the autumn I would say, sitting in the whisky bar at the hotel, in the beautful settings of Loch Lomond. Or perhaps you end up stay overnight?

Nightclubs and cupcakes in London

My sister Sine and her friends went to London for a couple of days, and here are her best restaurant and nightclub tips:

Morito, tapas restaurant
Cosy Morito is a tapas restaurant situated on Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell. The interior is more rustic compared to its famous sister Moro next door. Here you sit on old chairs and stools around wooden tables which gives the restaurant a very relaxed and laid-back feeling. The place seemed to have a lot of regulars, which is usually a good grade for a restaurant. So if you like tapas, you should pay Morito a visit.

Find it on our Britain Map

Tube station: Angel, Farrington

Ping Pong, Dim Sum restaurant
Best Asian restaurant I’ve ever been to outside Asia! They serve delicious and perfectly cooked dim sum (baskets and dishes of little sweet and savoury snacks, usually steamed, baked or fried), good and original drinks and has great service, all packed in a modern Asian interior design. Can really recommend a visit!

Tube station: Westbourne Green, Bayswater

Primrose Bakery
If you like the 50s, good music and cupcakes all dressed in pink – you’ll love Primrose Bakery. This is cupcake heaven. Here you’ll find cupcakes in all the colours of the rainbow and in flavours like chocolate, vanilla, carrot, coffee or why not a lemon merigue.

Find it on our Britain Map
Website: www.primrosebakery.org.uk
Tube station: Covent Garden

Dragon Bar
Dragon Bar is a DJ-bar and the night I was there a female DJ played great music (a bit alternative) for a mixed crowd, but most people were probably between 22-28 years old. This place was right up my alley, but if you don’t like it, the bar is situated right in the middle of the best nightlife in East London, so there are several great clubs and bars just around the corner.

Find it on our Britain Map
Tube station: Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton

Eight over Eight, bar/nightclub
Eight over Eight is a trendy bar and pan-Asian restaurant on Kings Road in Chelsea. Unfortunately we never had time to visit this place. But my friend Karin, who lives in London loves it, so this is a definite first choice next time I visit London. It’s a really popular place though, so be sure to book a table before you go.

Enjoy your stay in London!

Dine with Sybil and Basil from Fawlty Towers

Are you a fan of the TV series and ever wondered what it would be like to stay  and dine at Fawlty Towers?

I’m sure it would be quite a unique experience…and this autumn you’ve got the chance to try it at The Faulty Towers Dining Experience on the London restaurant ship Hispaniola.

As a guest you become part of an interactive theatre experience while you are served a three-course meal by a cast re-enacting the many comedy lines and controlled chaos from the television series Fawlty Towers. The main television characters, hoteliers Sybil and Basil Fawlty and their Spanish waiter Manuel, all take part in a two-hour dining event.

The Faulty Towers Dining Experience has been touring Australia since 1997 and Europe since 2008. The London cast features Alison Pollard-Mansergh as Sybil, Michael Davoren as Basil and Andy Foreman as Manuel.

It runs between 4-30 October, Tue–Sun at 6.30–7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets cost £75 for the two-hour show including a three-course meal.

Bon Appetit and lots of laughter I presume!

A whisky lover’s guide to Scotland – part seven

Here is the seventh – and the very last part – of Hanna Tunberg’s whisky diary from Scotland! Hope you’ve all enjoyed it!

Day 7

The Green Grocer cafe, Stirling

We’ve got an extra day to spend in Sterling. A little shopping for gifts after an inspiring visit to Stirling Castle. An unexpected highlight is todays lunch. We are, I have to admit, a bit tired of bar food and finds an organic/fair trade/locally produced coffee shop in a courtyard at the Upper Craig. A narrow port opens onto a coffee shop and delicatessen. Local cheeses and hams rubbing shoulders with luxury variants from the rest of Europe. We point and thick slices of ham and cheese are mixed with locally grown fresh vegetables on our sandwiches. So simple and so good. After stacking up on provisions we get in the car and drive the short half-hour to Edinburgh.

The whisky trip is largely complete, and after a late and happy evening at Dirty Dick’s pub on Rose Street, Edinburgh airport looks pale and a bit tired in the morning mist – or is it just me?

Hanna’s trip was arranged by Scotland Tours, VisitScotland and VisitBritain.

If you want to dine with a British star, where is the place to go? To one of the 137 Michelin starred restaurants in the United Kingdom of course!

And so it happens that the centenary edition of the UK and Ireland Michelin Guide was announced on Tuesday – and good news, there are more stars than ever!

For 2011 there are a total of 137 Michelin starred establishments in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Yum, yum, I’m getting hungry now!

All the 12 new stars is for restaurants in England, but there are still 125 other restaurants in the whole of UK you could try out. There are a couple of new stars in the East End of London: notably Viajante, run by the acclaimed Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, and Galvin La Chapelle in Spitalfields.

And one of my own favourites, the quirky Petersham Nurseries Café in Richmond …a perfect place for a day trip, in a calm and relaxing environment.

Daylesford Farmshop & Café – An organic piece of heaven

A couple of weeks ago, the Danish journalist Hanne Høiberg visited Daylesford Farmshop & Café in London. Here’s her review.

“- Want to try a piece of brie with truffle, we just made it?

The waiter behind the bar must be a mind reader. I was just thinking, full of a fantastic pumpkin risotto and a glass of the house wine from their vineyard in Provence, that I might want a little piece of cheese to go down with the rest of the wine. So of course I say yes and complete the meal with a perfect little piece of mature soft brie, together with some mascarpone and truffle oil – on the house.

The staff here at Daylesford Farmshop & Café in Notting Hill is without a doubt passionate about their work and want to share their passion with a Danish journalist doing a research trip. Not that I told them I wanted to write about it. In their eyes I’m just one of all the tourists coming through, who looks like they’re enjoying the food and the beautiful surroundings. And they are perfectly right.

It was a total coincidence that I wandered into this hidden pearl on cosy Westbourne Growe – a vegetable shop, bakery, butcher, cheese store and café, all in one. And everything is organic! Actually, I originally just popped in for a quick cappuccino, the best I’ve ever had in London and enjoyed the sight of the bulging cabbages, crispy carrots, homemade raspberry vodka and yellow cheddar on display in the light rooms decorated in with a Nordic design, while feeling the delightful smell of newly baked bread. After that experience, I just had to come back for breakfast.

Almost everything in both the shop and the café comes from Dayleford’s organic farm in Gloustershire. Not only the beef, chicken, fruits and vegetables are made here, but also the milk, yogurt and cheese, because Daylesford also has their own creamery. And the few ingredients that are not produced at Daylesford, are all from farms living by the same philosophy of organic foods and sustainability.

The Daylesford products have won more than 80 national and international gastronomic prizes. So if you value good fresh food in a beautiful environment, Daylesford Farmshop & Café is a must, when you are in London. “

Daylesford Farmshop & Café in Notting Hill is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am – 7pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm. Get directions in our Britain Map or visit their website www.daylesfordorganic.com for further information about their farm or other shops.

Enjoy!
